Air Conditioning and Electrical Technology School

 Before joining a cooling school, students normally require a minimum of a GED, high school diploma, or equivalent. Although some installers of heating and cooling systems go through apprenticeship or on-the-job training, many learn the requisite skills through formal technical training courses. During these programs, in-depth procedures for servicing industrial or domestic heating and cooling systems are covered and come in the form of certificate, diploma, and Associate of Occupational Studies Degree programs.

 Associate of Occupational Studies (AOS) Degree in Air Conditioning & Electrical Technology

This 2-year program blends professional experience with a liberal arts foundation. Students at ITI Technical College are trained on air circulation, oil and gas heating systems, and electrical heating and cooling mechanisms. They also learn construction mathematics and the application of industrial skills such as brazing and soldering in cooling schools. Some of the topics offered may include:

Certificate in Air Conditioning & Electrical Technology

The certificate program for heating and cooling technicians in most cooling schools usually takes 1-2 years to complete. Students in this program learn how to handle refrigerants correctly and to deal with electrical circuits. They also learn how to diagnose, build and operate heating and cooling systems. Some of the topics of this course can include:


        Construction and maintenance of project management

        Mechanical design codes for HVAC

        Considerations on the construction of HVAC system

        Calculation of HVAC system load and psychrometry

Job Prospects in Air Conditioning & Electrical Technology

Technical jobs are often overlooked even though they are one of the biggest in the clean energy industry. The HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) field is divided into installation and technical practice, with some practitioners doing both.

Demand for air conditioning and electrical technicians is expected to rise by 4% over the next ten years. This is almost the same as the average for all occupations.  Commercial and residential development is expected to fuel employment growth, and work prospects for air conditioning and electrical technicians are expected to be good.

Duties of Heating, Air Conditioning and Technicians and Installers

Heating, air conditioning, and cooling technicians, often referred to as HVAC technicians, work on heating, ventilation, and cooling systems that regulate the temperature and air quality in rooms. Their duties include:

        HVAC system installation, repair, and maintenance

        Repairing and replacing damaged parts of the HVAC system

        Inspecting and testing HVAC systems and their components

        Diagnosing system malfunctions

        Recommending maintenance to boost system performance

        Wiring and electrical installations

        Taking and keeping records of jobs undertaken

Since air conditioning and cooling systems have become highly sophisticated, employers typically favor post-secondary candidates or others who have completed apprenticeships. Any states and localities may request that technicians be certified. Employers may need to conduct a background check before they recruit.
